چکیده

We present low–medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing AM Her system MN Hya (RX J0929–24). We determine the magnetic field strength at the primary accretion region of the white dwarf to be 42MG from the spacing of cyclotron features visible during φ ∼0.4–0.7. From spectra taken during the eclipse we find that the secondary has a M3–4 spectral type. Combined with the eclipse photometry of Sekiguchi, Nakada & Bassett and an estimate of the interstellar extinction we find a distance of ∼300–700pc. We find unusual line variations at φ ∼0.9: Hα is seen in absorption and emission. This is at the same point in the orbital phase that a prominent absorption dip is seen in soft X-rays.

ASCA observation of the polar RX J 1802 . 1 + 1804

We present X-ray data of RX J1802.1+1804 obtained by ASCA. Although it shows a clear orbital intensity modulation with an amplitude of nearly 100% below 0.5 keV in ROSAT data, the ASCA light curves are nearly flat except for a possible dip lasting about one-tenth of the orbital period. We discuss this within the model assumption of a stream-eclipsing geometry as derived from the ROSAT observati...

Comae – a jumping jack among the cataclysmic variables

We analyse photometric and spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of the X-ray source RX J1239.5+2108 (hereafter named S 10932 Comae Berenices), which proved to be a nova-like variable with deep eclipsing minima. It is variable on a variety of timescales. In addition to a “normal brightness state”, in which S 10932 spends most of its time, there are eruption states (like in dwarf...

On the secondary star of the galactic supersoft X-ray source RX J0925.7−4758 and Doppler tomography of the emission lines

We carried out optical spectroscopic observations of the galactic supersoft X-ray source RX J0925.7−4758. The relatively long orbital period among supersoft X-ray sources was confirmed. The nature of the secondary star is discussed using its invisibility in the optical spectrum. Under the hypothesis of a non-eclipsing white dwarf, we derived an A–G giant secondary with an inclination angle of 5...

RX J 0719 . 2 + 6557 : a new eclipsing polar

A newmagnetic cataclysmic variable is identified as the counterpart of the X-ray source RX J0719.2+6557 which has been discovered during the ROSAT all-sky survey. Optical spectroscopy of the ≈ 17m object revealed a pattern of Balmer and strongHe II emission lineswhich are characteristic for cataclysmic variables. The emission lines show radial velocity variations with a period of 98.2 min with ...

Time-resolved Hst Spectroscopy of Four Eclipsing Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Time-resolved, multi-epoch, Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet eclipse spectrophotometry is presented for the magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) V1309 Ori, MN Hya, V2301 Oph, and V1432 Aql. Separation of the eclipse light curves into specific wavebands allows the multiple emission components to be distinguished. Accretion-heated photospheric spots are detected in V1309 Ori and V2301 Oph, ind...
